A gentle breeze tousled Hinkle’s hair and tickled her cheek. She rolled over with a sleepy moan. The grass and crinkled leaves beneath her were warm and comforting. She nuzzled her head into the ground, and drool trickled from the side of her mouth. She wished she could lie there forever in that peaceful daze, oblivious to the troubles of the world. But as Hinkle turned onto her back and blinked her puffy eyes open, she saw the orange sky through the limbs of the withered cherry tree. She knew what would happen next. But that lonely memory did not keep her from stretching out her limbs with a yawn.

The heavy weight of sorrow pressed upon her chest as her hand met with a cold stone surface. She knew what it was, what it said. She had been here before, three years ago.

She sat up and gazed at the stone slabs resting in the groomed lawn. Beyond the slabs and the iron fence, purple peaks loomed over the green valleys far below, dark against the fiery sunset. She was in the Bazak Mountains, at Heroine’s Heart Abbey. She had fallen asleep in the graveyard.

Her grandmother was about to come find her and announce that they were leaving and that the prioress was a self-righteous cow whose milk had gone sour. Sadie had never gotten along well with clergy, and Hinkle could hardly blame her. She turned and stared gloomily at the tombstone inscribed with that shameful paradox.

Rest Thou in Peace:

Meredith,

Sister of the Order of Sacred Virgins,

And Loving Mother
